The Distinguished Conduct Medal
Introduced during the Crimean War as a gallantry award for other ranks
only. Additional awards are represented by a bar attached to the
ribbon. The Distinguished Conduct Medal carried a monetary gratuity and
were always issued named, including number and rank, on the rim.. Bars
were issued for subsequent awards. With the introduction, in 1993, of
the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, the D.C.M. became obsolete.
The obverse (since 1902) shows an effigy of the reigning sovereign. The
reverse has a four-line inscription 'FOR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT IN THE
FIELD'.
The ribbon is crimson with a dark blue central stripe.
